Here's news from my friends at BRIGHTER GREEN. Please take a look at this!

Mia MacDonald, under the auspices of her new non-profit organization Brighter Green, has just compiled an extensive report on China's environmental, human health, animal welfare, and food security challenges in the wake of their adoption of the Western meat-intensive diet and intensive farming of animals. The introduction has even been translated into Chinese. This is the first in a series of papers that will look at the same phenomenon of globalization in Brazil, India, and Ethiopia, coming Fall 2008.

Joy Askew
The Pirate Of Eel Pie
(Red Parlor)

Anyone who can front a rock band called Bitch, perform with Peter Gabriel, Laurie Anderson, Joe Jackson and Rodney Crowell, among others, then form an electronic jazz duo with Takuya Nakamura called Echo definitely has it all going on. But what’s most striking about Joy Askew’s new album, The Pirate Of Eel Pie, is how totally original it is. Askew’s songs are an emotional rollercoaster, each different than the previous one, and show such a fearlessness that it’s a wonder she isn’t better known. From “Hip These Days” to “Jimmy’s Gone Now” to “Jack Kerouac” is a dazzling run through modern music, featuring folk, rock, classical and even electronic influences that all fit together perfectly. Produced by Askew and, on some songs, Ricky Fataar, these ten songs are a breathtaking example of just how good music still is. Doubters are directed immediately to the last track, “Poor Man’s Greed.” It’s as strong a statement of compassion as we can expect to hear, so far beyond the fear masquerading as strength these days that it’ll chill your bones. Stunning.

PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP/MASTERCLASS WITH  SINGER SONGWRITER JOY ASKEW
At Googies Lounge at The Living Room in New York City
Venue and time details on the dates page.

Joy Askew has performed concert tours all over the world with such luminary artists as Peter Gabriel, Joe Jackson, Laurie Anderson, David Byrne and Nashville's own Rodney Crowell. She toured with these artists as a musician and background singer and also was featured on solo singing spots.
Faced with the challenge of so much diversity, Joy studied voice throughout these years with New York teacher David Jones. She practiced and created  vocal exercises,  developing a technique that rose to all the challenges of performing on big stages and being part of a heavy touring schedule, often performing on live TV in between shows.

Coming off the road, Joy began to release her own CD's ( 6 to date) and perform in smaller venues and clubs around the USA. She found the 'intimacy' of a small club to be sometimes  more of a challenge than the arena at Madison Square Garden. While in New York, Joy began to teach others the voice technique she learned from her teacher and from her own experiences of the last twenty five years.

This Performance Workshop/Masterclass will spotlight 7 singers who will perform 1 song each. Joy will coach each participant on their performance and will include the audience in some of the exercises. All the performers and auditors are encouraged to pitch in with positive critiquing only.

For all enquiries to be a participating performer click here.

Some of Joy's students have included:
Melanie Gabriel
Peter Gabriel
Ben Lee
Rich Robinson (The Black Crowes)
Tim Finn
Angelina Jolie
Claire Danes

The following review appeared on www.goodtimesmag.com:

Joy Askew

The Living Room
New York City

Joy Askew continued her five-part residence at The Living Room with his solo upstairs show, performing songs that were newer than those on her March 6 CD release "The Pirate of Eel Pie" and delving and diving solo into many of those tracks as well.

Askew is best known as the keyboardist and singer who, in reverse order, released the acclaimed down-tempo dance synth CD of torch song standards “Echo,” toured with and appeared on albums by Peter Gabriel and Joe Jackson, and backed Laurie Anderson on tour. Her background is obscure to many except diehard fans, but she actually majored on saxophone at Jazz College in England. Her career took wing and she ended up working with Anderson, Jack Bruce, and others shortly after arriving in New York in the 1980s, even as she took flight from her small town back in England.

It is this flight that is the subject of her new CD, The Pirate Of Eel Pie, flight from but recollection of the past, and flight of the captive bird on the CD cover (Askew is a strong animal rights advocate). The pirate of the CD title refers to a Pirate Radio station that inspired her fellow artists and dreamers as she was beginning her career and her escape to America and success.

The show opened with new material in the bubbly piano-accompanied "Bird In Flight," about birds trapped on ledges, but perhaps also being spiritually trapped. This was followed by a partial set of songs from the new album. The bio-jazzy “London Rain” wa a highlight. More autobiographical material followed, including "Walked Under Waterfalls," a personal reflection of the singer on the death and its impact of Jimi Hendrix, Martin Luther King, and John Lennon.

One song missing from the April 23 set and which caught my ear on the CD and at the release show was “War (Why Don’t You Go Home),” written about Guantonamo, car bombs, and Iraq from a child’s perspective. It is a powerful song. “War’s” goth minor key riff and ascending, beseeching chorus showcases Askew’s skilled writing approach on the CD, available to listen to and order on CDBaby.com and JoyAskew.com.

The band premiere was at the Living Room; upstairs, her solo Googie’s Lounge evenings continue on Wednesdays through May. Askew announced that as she evolved her approach to the show, she would add guests as she did in her 2006 Joy Diversion Series at Joe’s Pub (which included Michelle Shocked, Suzie Tyrell, Richard Julian, Willie Nile, and other friends “dropping in”). She also works the most impressive delay pedal ever heard, building walls of a capella vocals for originals and Dylan cover tunes. The series continues through May and promises to be innovative and edgy in this same journeying vein.

The Pirate of Eel Pie is reviewed in Satya online magazine's April/May '07 issue:

"Joy Askew is a minstrel for animal activists, regularly performing at animal related events. As a vegan, Joy's compassion for animal extends to her excellent new CD. In "Hip These Days," Joy sings, "In between your mouth and the plate is the most significant choice you're gonna make." With soulful songs that range from bright to melancholy, covering topics from advocacy to war to London's music scene in the 1970's, Joy has succeeded in creating a work that celebrates both music and activim.

This Review just in (from the Observer in London):

Yungchen Lhamo
Ama (Real World)
Since fleeing Tibet as a young woman in 1990, Lhamo has quietly established herself as one of the world's most exquisite voices, the purity and scale of her singing conjuring up the vastness of her Himalayan homeland. Backings seem almost superfluous - a touch of new-age synth and her meditative qualities risk turning into something from a scented candle shop. This third album avoids all such perils, adding the lightest of touches from violin, flute, drum and even an African kora. There are laments, but also earthy evocations of delight and contentment, notably on 'Tara', alongside guest singer Joy Askew.

I am working on a new CD in San Francisco and here in New York with my friend, producer and drummer Ricky Fataar. These are personal and passionate songs written on the guitar and piano. A lot of them draw from my past, growing up in the North of England and being young in London in the 70's... a time of bedsits, Pirate Radio, American draft dodgers from the Vietnam war, musicians, painters, cold gas fire winters and dreams of escape to America.

I just had the great experience of singing on the new CD of Tibetan singer and friend Yungchen Lhamo. It will be released this Summer on Real World records. Yungchen's voice is incredible and the tracks are gorgeously produced. The album also features Annie Lennox on vocals. Watch out for it!

My next performance will be on June 22nd in NYC (see dates).
